Field Recording Workshops

Introduction to the art of listening, recording and creative design with sounds from open fields.

Capturing and shaping sounds

From recording to creative processing

In our field recording workshops, you’ll learn how to record natural and urban soundscapes – from the rustling of leaves or birdsongs to city noise. We’ll show you which microphones, recorders and setups are suitable for different situations and teach you about volume levels, wind protection, recording techniques, and post-processing. In addition, you’ll learn how to edit, archive and organize your recordings and, last but not least, how to work creatively with your own sounds: How can field recordings be integrated into music, sound design or artistic projects? The result is a practical mix of technical know-how and artistic experimentation.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

No – you don't need any experience to take part in the workshop. The course is aimed at anyone interested in sound, listening and recording technology. Basic knowledge of audio can be helpful, but it's not a prerequisite. We'll start with an introduction to the basics and adapt the pace to suit the group. This means that beginners and experienced participants alike will benefit.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring your own laptop so that you can edit and archive your recordings directly. Feel free to use the audio workstation of your choice. The workshop will begin at studio b media recording studio in Essen, where we’ll first introduce the technology and theory. Then we’ll head outside – to parks, courtyards, streets and industrial areas around the city. There, we’ll record sounds together and discuss different recording situations on site. Finally, we’ll return to the studio to review, edit and archive the material together.

How long does the workshop last?

The workshop takes place on a Saturday or Sunday and lasts around eight hours, including short breaks. The schedule may vary slightly depending on the size of the group and weather conditions. We value a relaxed atmosphere in which there is enough time to answer questions, share experiences and sharpen your hearing.

How large is the group?

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of six people. This ensures that each participant receives individual support – both during practical work outside and during post-processing in the studio.
